Changelog

What changed in each version of Nap.

Nap 1.3

15 October 2026

Two small improvements.

  • The map lines on the dark styles are brighter, so the map actually shows.
  • Speed now reads as a multiple of each screensaver’s normal pace, 1× being its default, instead of an internal number like 840.

Nap 1.2

12 October 2026

A fix.

  • Updating Nap left the screensaver itself on the old version. Nap replaced its own app but not the copy macOS loads, so after an update the window said An older version is installed — which looked like the update had failed, and meant a new screensaver wasn’t running until you pressed Update. Nap now brings the installed screensaver up to date when it opens, without asking.

Nap 1.1

11 October 2026

A small update.

  • Nap now sends one anonymous signal when it’s first installed and once a day it’s opened: the app version and a random install ID, nothing about you or your Mac. It’s how I can tell how many people use Nap. The privacy page has the details.

Nap 1.0

9 October 2026

The first release. Six screensavers, one app that installs them.

The screensavers

  • Flip Clock — the time on split-flap cards, drifting across the display and reflecting off all four edges. Every digit turns over in two stages, the way a real split-flap board does. 12-hour clock and seconds are optional.
  • Football — a ball fired from a slingshot. Twelve pentagons and twenty hexagons, tumbling as it travels, growing as it slows. When it stops, the slingshot turns up where it landed and sends it somewhere new.
  • Paper Plane — wanders over the map with a dotted route behind it, and skywrites a message if you give it one.
  • Puzzle Cube — tumbles across the display, scrambling itself one turn at a time and solving itself again.
  • Pendulum Wave — a row of pendulums seen from above, falling out of step into waves and back into line once a minute.
  • Plotter — a pen drawing a new harmonograph figure on a card, one after another.

Styles

Twelve styles on seven backgrounds, which is 504 combinations. Speed and size on every screensaver, and settings kept separately for each one, so the clock and the football do not share a look.

The app

  • Installs the screensavers and takes you to the right pane in System Settings.
  • Previews the real screensaver while you change its settings.
  • Frame rate: Automatic draws every frame the display can show on power, and 30 a second on battery.
  • Tells you when a newer version is out and updates itself.

Licensing

Two days free from the first time you open Nap, then a key for one Mac, which you can move to another whenever you like. No subscription and no expiry.
