Football Screensaver for Mac

Twelve pentagons and twenty hexagons, tumbling as they travel. The ball leaves the slingshot small and fast, grows as it slows, and when it finally stops the slingshot turns up wherever it landed and sends it off again.

The Football screensaver running here, in the Moss style.

Part of Nap: screensavers for macOS 13 or later, $5 once after the trial.

It is a real ball, not a sprite

The ball is a truncated icosahedron — the same shape a football is stitched from — drawn face by face and rotated as it moves, with the faces behind it left out. That is why the tumble reads correctly from any angle instead of looking like a spinning picture.

The slingshot

It bounces off every edge, losing a little speed each time, and the ball grows as its energy drops. When it comes to rest, the slingshot appears where it stopped, draws it back, and fires it somewhere new. Nothing is on a timer you can predict, so it never settles into a loop.

What you can change

  • Speed — how hard the slingshot fires.
  • Size — from a small ball crossing a big display to one that dominates it.
  • Style — any of them, on any background, including the Moss above.
